One thing that you learn when going to school for Carpet Cleaning is the importance of a good strong pre-vac before you get started on your cleaning. Many of my awesome Customers vacuum before I arrive and always let me know this right when I break out my Vac. A good carpet cleaner knows that you always vacuum even if your Customer has already tried to save you some time.

Many times my customers are amazed that I can still fill a canister (or 2- lol) when I go right behind them and vacuum an area that they just vacuumed. Sometimes I vac up so much after the Customer vacuums that they believe their vacuum is not a good machine in keeping their carpets cleaned.  Really, almost any vacuum will get the job done (hunter is pictured with a floor vac here, most of the time he uses his backpack vac), as long as you follow these steps for the perfect vacuum.

1. Do not put anything down before the vac. No deodorizers or carpet cleaners. These powdered and liquids can actually keep more dirt in your fibers while the vacuum power focuses on the product you applied wasting valuable suction power that could be used for dirt.

2. Use a carpet rake before you vacuum. A carpet rake is a great tool for pre-loosing soils before you vac. These rakes can be bought online or at a local janitorial supply store. Start at the top of the room and work your way down in 4-6′ sections as you rake.  Rake your carpet all the way to and out the door.

3. Sweep the edges with a crevice tool or brush. Tight corners (especially behind doors) can hold lots of dirt and grime.  Sweep these hard-to-reach spots real well out onto the carpet and then use your vacuum crevice tool to clean it up.

4. Make “Shark Teeth” patterns when vacuuming in a 3-1 pass. Up – back – up and then back with your first tooth. This pattern is a trade tool that helps you make sure you double hit any spot and keep a consistent vacuum.

5. Make sure your vacuum is clean. The importance of a clean vacuum cleaner goes without saying. Always check your roller for debris, make sure your canister or bag is clean, and that your brushes are debris free.

Following these important vacuuming tips will add years of life to your carpet and keep them the cleanest for the best smell and the least amount of allergens.
